Chief Bisi Akande, the pioneer Interim Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has cautioned Nigerians against returning the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to power in the 2027 general elections, describing it as a move that could lead the nation into deeper crisis.
Speaking to journalists in Ila Orangun, Osun State, on Saturday as part of activities marking his 85th birthday anniversary, Akande expressed his concerns about a proposal by opposition parties to form a coalition and challenge the ruling party.
“The return of the PDP to power would be disastrous for Nigeria.
It would only exacerbate the current challenges facing the country,” Akande stated, addressing the potential consequences of the opposition’s plan.
He emphasized that the APC inherited a complex and weakened political and economic structure upon assuming power, which has necessitated significant efforts to address long-standing issues.
Akande highlighted the difficulties associated with steering the nation’s course amid such challenges.
“In repairing the damages done over the years, there will inevitably be hurdles. These hurdles are what we are witnessing now,” he explained, alluding to the ongoing efforts to rebuild the country’s foundations.
While acknowledging that the APC government under President Muhammadu Buhari is not without flaws, Akande underscored the need for continuity and steadfastness in addressing the nation’s deep-rooted problems.
“PDP was defeated because it had no clue,” Akande stated, referring to the circumstances that led to the party’s loss in previous elections. He cautioned against a return to the status quo, emphasizing the importance of sustained efforts to overcome the country’s challenges.
As Nigeria looks ahead to the 2027 elections, Akande’s warning serves as a reminder of the critical choices facing the nation and the potential implications of those choices on its future.
The All Progressives Congress (APC) has yet to officially respond to Akande’s comments.
