Point of Sale (PoS) operators in Umuahia, the capital of Abia State, were subjected to a harrowing experience as armed robbers launched coordinated attacks on their businesses on Sunday.
The incidents, which occurred in broad daylight, left the city’s residents in shock and highlighted the increasing vulnerability of small business operators in the region.
The first attack took place along Uzuakoli Road, a bustling area of the city known for its commercial activity.

According to eyewitnesses, the robbers arrived on the scene in a tricycle, a common mode of transportation in the area, but one that has increasingly been used for criminal activities due to its mobility and inconspicuous nature.
The armed men reportedly began by firing shots into the air, causing panic among the public and forcing bystanders to flee for safety.
This tactic of intimidation allowed them to isolate their targets, the PoS operators, whom they swiftly ordered to surrender their cash.
Tragically, one of the PoS operators, who hesitated in complying with the robbers’ demands, was shot by the assailants.
The gunshot left residents and passersby, including those attending nearby churches, terrified.
The robbers, after seizing the money, quickly escaped the scene, leaving behind a trail of fear and confusion.
Not long after the first incident, a second attack was reported on the opposite side of the town, along the Azikiwe-Ikot Ekpene Road and near the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) axis.
Here, the robbers targeted another PoS dealer, employing similar methods of intimidation and violence.
However, this time, their gunshots attracted the attention of officers from the Abia State Police Command.
The police, upon hearing the commotion, mobilised to the scene, forcing the robbers to abandon their operation and flee.
While it remains unclear whether the robbers were able to make off with any cash during their second attack, reports suggest that at least two PoS operators were shot during the attacks. These victims are now receiving medical treatment at a hospital in Umuahia, according to sources from ABN TV Umuahia.
The condition of the injured PoS operators remains unknown, but the community is hoping for their swift recovery.
The Abia State Police Command, through its spokesperson, ASP Maureen Chinaka, confirmed the incidents later on Sunday. “Yes, there was such an incident, but the police did the needful, and an investigation is ongoing,” ASP Chinaka stated.
The police’s response, though timely, has raised questions about the overall security in the city, particularly for small business operators who are increasingly becoming targets for criminal elements.
This latest series of attacks underscores the growing insecurity faced by PoS operators in Umuahia and other parts of Nigeria.
The PoS business, which has boomed in recent years due to its convenience for customers who need to withdraw cash in areas with limited banking infrastructure, has also become a lucrative target for criminals.
The cash-heavy nature of the business, coupled with the often-limited security measures in place, makes PoS operators easy prey for robbers.
Local business owners and residents are now calling for increased security measures to protect PoS operators and other small businesses in the area.
Many are advocating for the installation of surveillance cameras in key locations, more visible police patrols, and the creation of a rapid response unit dedicated to handling incidents of armed robbery.
There is also a push for PoS operators to take personal security more seriously, possibly by pooling resources to hire private security or by limiting the amount of cash kept on hand.
The attacks in Umuahia are a stark reminder of the challenges faced by small business operators in Nigeria, who must navigate not only the difficulties of running a business but also the ever-present threat of crime.
As the investigation into these incidents continues, it is hoped that the perpetrators will be swiftly apprehended and brought to justice, providing some measure of relief to a community left shaken by these violent events.
In the meantime, PoS operators in Umuahia and beyond will likely remain on high alert, wary of the possibility of further attacks.
The need for a comprehensive approach to tackling crime, one that involves both law enforcement and community participation, has never been more apparent.
