The Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Brig. Gen. Buba (rtd), has disclosed a staggering achievement in the agency’s relentless efforts to combat illicit drugs and substances across the nation. Over the course of three years, the NDLEA has successfully seized a substantial 7,590 tons of these prohibited substances, amounting to an estimated value exceeding N800 billion. This significant milestone was revealed during a visit to the NDLEA headquarters in Abuja by the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Gen. Christopher Musa, on a Monday.
In addition to the colossal drug seizures, the agency has been unwavering in its commitment to maintaining law and order. A remarkable 42,105 drug offenders have been apprehended during the same period, reflecting the NDLEA’s dedication to eradicating the menace of illicit substances. Among those arrested are 46 drug barons, contributing to a substantial dent in the illicit drug trade that fuels criminal activities nationwide.
The NDLEA Chairman underscored the pivotal role of drugs in various criminal activities, citing their association with terrorism, kidnapping, and insurgency. He stated that beyond the enforcement aspect, the agency has also focused on rehabilitation, with 29,400 drug users having received counseling and rehabilitation within the same three-year timeframe.

Expressing gratitude to the armed forces for their unwavering commitment and sacrifice in safeguarding the nation, Chairman Buba acknowledged their critical contributions. These contributions encompassed areas such as arms and ammunition supply, as well as the training of officers and men. He urged the military to consider establishing a central rehabilitation center, advocating for the integration of drug rehabilitation facilities into existing military hospitals to address substance abuse issues among personnel.
Gen. Christopher Musa, the Chief of Defence Staff, emphasized the need for enhanced collaboration between the Armed Forces of Nigeria and the NDLEA to effectively tackle the challenges posed by substance abuse and illicit drug trafficking in the country. He applauded the NDLEA for its swift and efficient response to drug-related issues on a nationwide scale.
Highlighting the impact of drugs on security, Gen. Musa noted that theatre Commanders in the Northeast had observed the consequences of drug use, where individuals under the influence gained false confidence, posing a threat to the security landscape. The Chief of Defence Staff commended the agency’s proactive approach in making arrests and emphasized the positive image it portrays to the international community.
As the NDLEA continues its robust efforts to combat drug-related crimes, the collaboration with the Armed Forces stands as a testament to the comprehensive approach taken by the government to address the multifaceted challenges posed by illicit substances. The dedication and achievements of the NDLEA underscore the importance of a united front against drug trafficking and abuse for the overall well-being and security of the nation.
