The family of late former President Muhammadu Buhari has expressed profound gratitude to President Bola Tinubu, government officials, and Nigerians from all walks of life for the overwhelming support received before and after his death.
In a statement issued on Sunday and signed by presidential aide Garba Shehu, the family’s eldest member, Malam Mamman Daura, said the widespread show of love and solidarity—both within and outside Nigeria—has given the family the strength to bear the loss.
“All of Nigeria showed up to honour Buhari, comfort us, and pray for him. We truly appreciate all the visits, messages, and prayers,” the statement read.

Daura specifically thanked President Tinubu for declaring a public holiday and renaming the University of Maiduguri in honour of the late president.
He also commended Vice President Kashim Shettima for attending the burial in Daura and subsequently visiting the family in the United Kingdom.
The family acknowledged international condolences, noting messages of sympathy from world leaders, including King Charles III, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres, and leaders of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
“Our thanks also go to leaders of other countries, including King Charles III, the UN Secretary-General, and ECOWAS leaders, for sending condolences and showing solidarity,” the statement said.
In addition, the family expressed gratitude to state governors, traditional rulers, religious leaders, members of the business community, civil society groups, politicians, and ordinary Nigerians who either visited or sent condolence messages.
“Muhammadu Buhari’s demise is an irreparable loss and its pain is beyond words, but the general reaction and kind expressions give us the strength to cope with the loss of our esteemed family member and former leader of the country,” the statement continued.
The family concluded by noting that the overwhelming love shown by Nigerians—at home and abroad—during the mourning period was both challenging and reassuring.
They prayed for divine blessings upon all who stood by them during their moment of grief.
