One of Burkina Faso’s most popular radio stations, Radio Omega, was shut down on Thursday by the junta-led government for airing criticism of the coup in the neighboring Niger Republic.
According to The Guardian, a radio station interviewed Ousmane Abdoul Moumouni, the leader of a movement in Niger to restore the government of the country’s democratically elected president, Mohamed Bazoum.
Communications Minister Rimtalba Jean Emmanuel Ouedraogo issued a statement on Thursday saying that the radio station has been temporarily shut down in the best interests of the country following the interview.
Moumouni derogatorily referred to the new government in Niger.
According to Ouedraogo, “his organization is clearly campaigning for violence and war against the sovereign people of Niger” in an effort to “restore Bazoum by every means.”
According to Infostride News, the Presidential Guard of Niger overthrew the government on July 26, 2023.
