The Labour Party (LP) has called for INEC chairman Mahmood Yakubu to be removed, but INEC has stated the LP has no legal standing to do so.
In a news conference on Thursday, the LP demanded that the world community take “punitive action” against INEC chairman Yakubu and other key officials for their roles in the shady handling of the 2023 polls.
The party claimed that the reports from election observer groups proved its case.
But INEC’s Chief Press Secretary, Rotimi Oyekanmi, told NAN that the “reasons adduced by the LP in making the latest and familiar demand are not only illogical but also ridiculous.”
Oyekanmi stated that INEC required local and international election observers to submit their findings to the commission in accordance with the rules and regulations under which they were accredited.
Therefore, no election observer has the authority to make accusations against INEC. They are just allowed to observe, give suggestions (if any), and never bring charges.
Similarly, “it is also not within the LP’s jurisdiction to demand the dismissal and prosecution of the INEC chairman over the outcome of an election in which the party fielded candidates,” Oyekanmi said.
