Thibaut Courtois is set to hold showdown talks with Chelsea over his future, according to the Metro.
.
The Belgian shot-stopper, who is currently in his third season on loan to Atletico Madrid, has been the subject of various rumours regarding his future over the last few months.
.
However, following increased interest from some of Europe’s top clubs, Mourinho is moving to tie the player to Chelsea.
.
Despite Petr Cech’s fine form over the past nine and a half seasons, it is Courtois whom Chelsea must look to as a flagship for the youthful re-branding of an ageing team.
.
According to Belgian sources, Courtois was quoted as saying: “My agent is talking with Chelsea. One of the coming weeks I’ll have a chat with José Mourinho.”
.
The talks are set to take place in March and April, with a decision expected before the end of the season.
.
For Chelsea fans, there remains something of a conundrum. Cech has been a loyal servant to the club, having recently equalled Peter Bonetti’s club record of 208 clean sheets in the 3-0 win at Southampton.
.
However, Courtois is commonly referred to as the best young goalkeeper in Europe and so his fine form between the sticks is something that cannot be ignored.
.
It begs the question as to whether the Chelsea board reward Cech with another season as No.1 and risk losing Courtois to another club or bring the youngster in for the new season and offer their veteran stopper a bit-part role in the squad.
.
Whatever the case, Mourinho must act quickly to assure worried Blues fans.
