Chinedum Orji, the former Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, has provided insight into his recent defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
In a statement released to the press on Friday in Umuahia, the Abia state capital, Orji stated that he departed from the PDP because the party had strayed from its foundational ideology.
He expressed disappointment in the PDP’s post-2023 election activities, which he believed were detrimental to the party’s unity and led to significant political losses.

Orji emphasized that the PDP’s current structure and operations do not offer prospects for the political growth of its members.
Thus, he felt compelled to lead his followers to a platform where they have better chances of political advancement.
He declared his allegiance to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and his Renewed Hope Agenda for national development.
Orji also commended the APC leadership at all levels for welcoming him and his followers, pledging to adhere to the party’s rules and regulations.
The former Speaker officially defected to the APC on Tuesday and was issued the party’s membership card by the state chairman of the party in Abia, Kingsley Ononogbu.
This move comes after Enyinnaya, the son of former Abia State Governor Theodore Orji, resigned from the PDP on Monday, citing internal party issues as his reason for leaving.
