A coalition of civil society organizations under the aegis of the Socialist Liberation Movement (SLM) has thrown its weight behind President Bola Tinubu’s economic policies and development initiatives.
The coalition’s position comes in the wake of criticism from former Central Bank of Nigeria Governor and Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, who, at the 21st Chief Gani Fawehinmi Memorial Lecture in Lagos on January 15, accused Tinubu’s administration of mishandling the economy.
Sanusi argued that the government lacked credible individuals to effectively communicate its economic policies to Nigerians.

Sanusi’s remarks have drawn backlash from the Federal Government and sections of the public, with many defending the administration’s policies.
Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja on Monday, SLM Convener Dr. Agabi Emmanuel highlighted the positive impact of Tinubu’s reforms, noting that they are addressing Nigeria’s economic challenges.
Key Economic Reforms
The coalition pointed to major reforms such as the removal of fuel subsidies and the floating of the naira, which they believe are restoring confidence in the economy.
They also praised the establishment of the Presidential Economic Coordination Council (PECC) and the Economic Management Team Emergency Taskforce (EET) for enhancing economic governance structures.
Infrastructure and Digital Economy
The SLM commended Tinubu’s commitment to infrastructure development through public-private partnerships, which aim to reduce transportation costs and improve market access.
They also acknowledged advancements in the digital economy, citing the Digital Nigeria Program, which focuses on broadband expansion, supporting tech startups, and creating new job opportunities.
“The administration’s investments in digital technology are driving innovation, boosting financial inclusion, and creating opportunities across sectors,” Dr. Emmanuel said.
Agriculture and Food Security
The coalition lauded agricultural initiatives such as the Food Security and Agricultural Mechanization Programme and the National Agriculture Growth Scheme-Agro-pocket, designed to increase food production and reduce reliance on imports.
Healthcare and Education
Tinubu’s administration also received praise for efforts to improve healthcare and education. Initiatives like the Health Sector Renewal Investment Initiative and the Basic Health Care Provision Fund (BHCPF) aim to enhance access to quality services and achieve Universal Health Coverage.
In education, the government’s #WeAreEqual campaign promotes inclusive education, skill development, and gender equity, alongside new policies addressing teacher training, data management, and out-of-school children.
Commitment to Transformative Governance
The coalition stressed that Tinubu’s administration is focused on job creation, poverty reduction, and macroeconomic stability, with significant investments in security and infrastructure.
“President Tinubu has embarked on a promising trajectory towards translating our hopes and aspirations into tangible realities, demonstrating a commitment to transformative governance and economic development,” SLM said.
The group emphasized that the administration’s bold reforms are laying a foundation for a better Nigeria, both for the current and future generations.
