Signs of division within the Ondo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) became evident on Sunday as several groups within the party announced their support for the Social Democratic Party (SDP) governorship candidate, Benson Akingboye, over APC’s Lucky Aiyedatiwa ahead of the November 16 election.
The coalition of groups—including Ondo Patriots, Ondo APC Solidarity Group, Jagaban Coalition, and APC Youth League—argued that the process that led to Aiyedatiwa’s candidacy was flawed, prompting their decision to support Akingboye.
In a statement issued by Dele Oyewo of Ondo Patriots, the groups labeled Aiyedatiwa an “opportunist,” claiming he continuously betrays those who helped him rise.

They expressed concern that Aiyedatiwa’s actions during the nomination process not only undermined party principles but also contributed to the socioeconomic challenges faced by Ondo State.
The statement read, “All these unfounded acts against the normal principle of nature by the present governor would bring untold hardship on the citizens.
Unless quickly corrected by the people through their ballots on November 16, the state will be clouded by total darkness of hardship in the coming years.”
The groups asserted that the SDP and its candidate represent a better choice, promising to dismantle the “castles of lies” erected by both the APC and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
They condemned Aiyedatiwa’s endorsement as a violation of electoral law and an insult to the dignity of the nation.
“We boldly declare that SDP is the most popular party in Ondo State and that it and its candidate will surely dismantle the false narratives put forth by the APC and the PDP,” the statement concluded.
