In a recent update, the Chairman of the Presidential Committee overseeing the implementation of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s End of Year Transportation Subsidy Programme, Mr. Dele Alake, announced that the initiative has been a remarkable success, benefiting over 160,000 passengers nationwide. This transformative program is set to conclude on January 4, 2024.
Mr. Dele Alake, who also serves as the Minister of Solid Mineral Development, shared this significant achievement through a post on his official social media handle, highlighting the positive impact the subsidy program has had on commuters across the country.
“The Committee on the Implementation of the End of Year Transportation Subsidy Programme of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is delighted to report that our program has achieved tremendous success, reaching and benefiting over 160,000 passengers nationwide,” stated Mr. Alake.

A detailed breakdown of the figures provided by the Chairman of the Committee reveals substantial numbers for both the Nigeria Railway Commission (NRC) and the Association of Luxury Bus Owners of Nigeria (ALBON). The NRC facilitated the transportation of approximately 71,000 passengers, while ALBON buses carried an additional 77,122 passengers during the specified period.
Mr. Alake also highlighted specific accomplishments at the Oshodi terminal, where 652 bus trips successfully transported 15,766 passengers over the past 10 days.
“I am proud to share that between December 21 and December 31, 2023, the NRC conveyed 71,000 passengers, while buses under ALBON carried 77,122 passengers,” Mr. Alake emphasized.
Providing context to this initiative, on December 20, President Tinubu, through Mr. Dele Alake, announced a 50% discount on road transport travel across designated routes from December 21, 2023, to January 4, 2024. Additionally, free train rides were offered across the country. This move was part of President Tinubu’s commitment to enhancing the well-being of Nigerians, especially during the festive season.
The designated travel routes covered by the program included major cities such as Abuja, Lagos, Kano, Kaduna, Enugu, Port Harcourt, Owerri, Ibadan, Akure, Maiduguri, Sokoto, and other significant inter-state transportation hubs.
The success of this transportation subsidy program underscores the positive impact of strategic interventions in the transportation sector to alleviate the financial burden on citizens and enhance accessibility during critical periods. As the program concludes on January 4, 2024, its positive outcomes serve as a testament to the government’s commitment to prioritizing the welfare of the Nigerian populace.
