The Federal government has revealed its intention to establish a dedicated law enforcement unit to combat illegal mining activities throughout the nation.
The Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Mr. Dele Alake, shared this initiative during an appearance on InfoStride News, where he discussed the government’s strategies for boosting the mining sector’s contribution to the economy.
Addressing questions regarding challenges within the mining industry, Mr. Alake emphasized the need to address security concerns through collaborative efforts with various security agencies. He also announced the formation of a specialized police unit specifically tasked with tackling this issue.
In his own words:
“Our intelligence reports have uncovered that certain illegal miners are directly linked to the rise in banditry in several regions of Nigeria. This is why I have been working closely with various security agencies, the National Security Adviser, and the President himself, who fully supports our initiative. We are in the process of establishing a specialized police unit, which we will refer to as the Mining Police Force or the Mine Police.”
Mr. Alake further elucidated that the proposed security unit’s scope would not be limited to the mining sector alone; it would also encompass operations related to maritime and the blue economy. He clarified that the Ministry of Solid Minerals would have authority over this special police force, and its personnel would be answerable to the ministry.
Additionally, the minister disclosed that the ministry had granted a 60-day grace period for illegal artisanal miners to formalize their operations, become financially viable, and fulfill their obligations by paying royalties and taxes to the government.
Streamlined Mining License Issuance Process
In response to inquiries about the process for potential investors to obtain mining licenses, Mr. Alake outlined the ministry’s plans to streamline the application and licensing procedures, making them as efficient as possible.
He explained:
“Our one-stop shop will provide a clear and concise roadmap for applicants, outlining the necessary steps and requirements, eliminating the need to navigate multiple departments and save valuable time. After completing the application process correctly, mining licenses will be issued in no more than 30 days.”
Mr. Alake underscored the significance of this licensing process, emphasizing its pivotal role in attracting investors and enhancing the ease of conducting business in the mining sector.
