Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, has strongly condemned the attack on a military checkpoint at Obikabia junction in the Ogbor Hill area of Aba, Abia State, on Thursday.
The assault by unidentified assailants reportedly left four soldiers dead.
In a statement on Thursday, Kalu described the killing of the military personnel, who were performing their lawful duties, as unwarranted, outrageous, unjust, cruel, and absolutely condemnable.

Kalu, who represents Bende Federal Constituency of Abia State, emphasized that the people of Aba, known for their enterprising spirit and technical skills, should not be misled into believing that closing their shops and staying at home is in their best interest.
He reminded the community that Aba is the commercial hub of the South East, hosting people from various backgrounds, and urged them to maintain their renowned hospitality rather than resort to violence, which he said is alien to the culture of Ndi Igbo.
Kalu noted that ongoing efforts to quell insecurity and restore peace in the South East, through initiatives like Peace In South East (PISE-P), should not be undermined by acts that could reverse the progress made.
The deputy speaker appealed to the public to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, which has shown significant interest in the development of the South East.
He warned that failing to do so could negatively impact the region’s fortunes.
Calling for peace between the community and the Nigerian armed forces, Kalu expressed condolences to the families of the victims.
He assured the military hierarchy of legislative support to identify the attackers and prevent such incidents in the future.
