On Thursday, the Department of State Services (DSS) purportedly detained Abdul’aziz Yari, a former governor of Zamfara State.
A source told The Nation that after failing in his campaign for Senate President, Yari was arrested as the leader of a new scheme to undermine the 10th Senate.
As reported by The Nation, “some northern Senators who were said to be unhappy with the choice of those who emerged were said to have approached Yari in the chambers after the announcement of Principal Officers, where they complained bitterly to him that the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio had abandoned them despite their support for him.”

According to the source, the DSS opted to examine Yari after learning that he had become a focal point for the opposition to Akpabio, particularly in the North.
An aide who spoke on the condition of anonymity told the Nation that Yari is currently in DSS custody, but that his arrest is unrelated to his campaign for Senate president.
Representatives who voted for Akpabio within the All Progressives Congress (APC), the aide added, were among those who were unhappy with the announcement of Principal Officers.
A few of them had protested to Yari, he said.
The President made a call to him, but he ignored it. “I assume somebody told them in Aso Rock that they are negotiating with Yari and Yari was becoming the rallying point for some unhappy Northern senators.
The DSS’s Public Relations Officer, Peter Afunanya, sent an SMS to the Nation denying any knowledge of Yari’s arrest and imprisonment.
