Ebonyi State Governor, Francis Nwifuru, has suspended the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, Uchenna Igwe, over alleged gross misconduct.
The suspension was announced during a press conference held at the New Government House, Centenary City, Abakaliki.
Governor Nwifuru stated that the commissioner was suspended for failing to address demands by civil servants at the local government level for the timely payment of gratuities.
“My administration has implemented the autonomy of the local government system, with allocations from the Federal Allocation Account going directly to the councils’ accounts. Despite this, the commissioner failed to act on the directive to resolve the gratuity issue,” Nwifuru said.
The governor also denied awareness of an alleged charge of ₦2,100 reportedly levied on local government workers for auditing purposes.
Nwifuru assured the public that a thorough investigation would be conducted to address the allegations and ensure appropriate measures are taken.
