Edo State Governor-elect, Monday Okpebholo, has expressed anticipation for a congratulatory message from the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidate in the recently concluded gubernatorial election, Asue Ighodalo.
After receiving his Certificate of Return from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Thursday, Okpebholo visited the Presidential Villa in Abuja, where he met with President Bola Tinubu.
During his visit, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate pledged to lead as a “servant-leader” and emphasised his commitment to the development of Edo State.
“For me, I’m coming as a servant to serve the Edo people.
That is what is required of me, and that is exactly what I’m going to do. Very soon, you will see a lot of development coming up in Edo,” Okpebholo said.
He added, “We are going to employ teachers, renovate our schools, and more. With time, you will recognise that a new dawn has begun.”
The governor-elect also extended an olive branch to the opposition, stating he is open to collaboration if they bring ideas that can benefit the state.
“If they have an idea that is beautiful and acceptable to the people, why not? My door is open to everybody.
They have to accept it. If I had lost, I would have congratulated the winner. So, I’m expecting them to congratulate me.”
Former Edo State Governor Adams Oshiomhole, who accompanied Okpebholo to the Presidential Villa, celebrated the victory, calling it a reclamation of the state for the people.
Oshiomhole highlighted the significance of Okpebholo’s election, emphasising his connection with ordinary citizens.
He contrasted Okpebholo’s leadership style with that of past administrations, particularly referencing a compassionate approach to governance.
“Edo people will now have a governor they can relate to easily, a governor they can hug, touch, and feel,” Oshiomhole said.
“Governance is not just about building roads and schools; it’s about having a leadership that is compassionate and listens to the feelings of the people.”
He further commented on the divine nature of Okpebholo’s victory, stating, “Only God can confer power. Man can make all the effort, but if God chooses not to crown it, it will be in vain.”
Oshiomhole also criticised past governance, particularly recalling incidents under the previous administration, including the jailing of pregnant women over minor offences.
He contrasted this with Okpebholo’s empathetic nature, highlighting the governor-elect’s humble approach and understanding of the challenges faced by the people.
“Edo people are excited to have a governor who understands their struggles, especially those in rural areas,” Oshiomhole concluded.
