As the September 21 governorship election approaches, Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki has stated that it would be difficult for him to reconcile with those who have offended him during his tenure.
Governor Obaseki made these remarks during a visit to the Edo State Muslims Pilgrim Welfare Board to bid farewell to intending pilgrims for the 2024 Hajj and to launch the state government’s “Feed the Vulnerable” program for Muslims in Benin City.
This statement came in response to an appeal by the State Chairman of the Muslims Pilgrim Welfare Board, Sheik Ibrahim Oyarekhua, who urged the governor to reconcile with those he has offended and those who have offended him, to foster unity and support for the upcoming election.

Obaseki asserted that good cannot reconcile with evil, emphasizing that those who thrive on making others miserable cannot be convinced to change.
“We can’t continue to convince those evil who would enjoy seeing our people miserable, who want to keep so much for themselves and leave the rest of our people poor,” he said.
“It would be hard to reconcile with those people. As you go on Hajj, pray for them to have a change of heart.”
The governor reiterated his commitment to using state resources to support the needy, stating, “I will use the money to buy food and feed the poor, give them to Imams and pastors to share for the poor in the next three months.”
Obaseki also urged the people to support his chosen successor, Asue Ighodaro of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), to continue the work he has started if they want to see positive changes continue.
Earlier, Sheik Ibrahim Oyarekhua emphasized the importance of reconciliation for political success.
“My appeal to Your Excellency is to try as much as possible to reconcile with people who have offended you and those you have offended in the course of your duties as governor,” he said.
“This will go a long way in assisting your candidate in winning this election without stress.”
Oyarekhua highlighted that reconciliation brings wisdom and strength, stating that “politics is a game of numbers” and unity is crucial for electoral success.
