The Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, has called on Nigerian youths to harness their technological expertise for the betterment of the nation and their personal development, rather than engaging in fraudulent activities.
Olukoyede’s message was delivered on Tuesday, 27th August 2024, during the Nigerian Youth Stakeholders’ Conversation, themed “Digital Economy Transition: Pathway to Global Competitiveness,” held in Abuja. Represented by the Commander of the EFCC’s Public Affairs Department, CE Wilson Uwujaren, Olukoyede highlighted the vast opportunities available for young Nigerians in the digital space. He urged them to focus on using their tech skills to contribute positively to the country’s economy rather than indulging in cybercrime.
“Everyone is aware of the incredible talent our young people possess, especially in the field of technology. The contributions of Nigerians to the fintech industry are particularly noteworthy. No other African nation boasts the same level of technological innovation as Nigeria,” Olukoyede stated. He further stressed that technology is the future, and it is vital that young Nigerians use their skills to benefit the nation.
Olukoyede warned that Nigeria’s global reputation is at risk due to the misuse of technology for fraudulent purposes. He called on all Nigerians to recognise the harmful impact of cybercrime on the nation’s economy and to join forces with the EFCC in the fight against it.
He also addressed the erosion of moral values in the country, pointing out the alarming trend of sudden, unexplained wealth among young people. “It is disheartening to see parents who do not question their children’s sudden wealth. We must return to our foundational moral values, which no Nigerian ethnic group has ever based on theft or deceit,” he remarked.
The event’s convener, Blessing Oyefeson, echoed Olukoyede’s sentiments, highlighting the importance of youth engagement with stakeholders and policymakers. She emphasised the need for an environment where Nigerian youths can thrive in the digital economy.
Ololade Ogunnubi, representing the Special Assistant to the President on Youth Initiative, Titilope Gbadamosi, outlined the federal government’s efforts to empower Nigerian youths in the digital space. She mentioned several initiatives under President Tinubu’s administration, including digital literacy campaigns, the establishment of tech hubs, and support for tech start-ups through capital and mentorship.
“Our commitment is unwavering, and our goal is clear: to create an enabling environment where every Nigerian youth can thrive in the digital economy,” Ogunnubi stated, urging youths to seize the opportunities available to them.
The discussion underscored the pivotal role of Nigerian youths in shaping the country’s digital future, encouraging them to channel their skills towards positive and impactful endeavours.
