In a targeted operation, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) arrested 14 suspected internet fraudsters in Makurdi, Benue State, on Wednesday, 21st August 2024.
The arrests were made during a sting operation conducted by the Makurdi Zonal Directorate, following credible intelligence linking the individuals to cyber fraud activities.
The operation took place at the Federal Low-Cost Housing Estate in Makurdi, where the suspects were apprehended. The EFCC acted on specific information pointing to their alleged involvement in internet-based financial crimes, commonly referred to as “419” or “Yahoo Yahoo.”
The individuals arrested during the operation include Austine Okwori, Osita Idoko Valentine, Skott King David, Thomas Ifebuche, Akor Kelvin Oche, Henry Adah, Scott Emmanuel Inalegwu, Ogbu Stephen Alpha, and Samuel Moses Ogbonna Ckukwuaogwu. Additionally, Mustapha Nasir Adinoye, Sylvanus Samuel Ogbu, Emmanuel Adamu, and Samuel Otene were also taken into custody.
During the operation, EFCC operatives recovered various items believed to have been used in the suspects’ fraudulent activities. These include mobile phones, laptops, and a collection of charms. The presence of charms, often associated with ritualistic practices intended to enhance fraudulent success, highlights the depths to which some criminals may go to deceive and defraud unsuspecting victims.
The EFCC has confirmed that investigations are ongoing to build a comprehensive case against the suspects. Once all necessary inquiries and evidence gathering have been completed, the accused will be formally charged in court. The EFCC remains committed to ensuring that the justice process is meticulously followed, allowing the courts to deliver appropriate judgments in line with Nigerian law.
This operation serves as a reminder of the EFCC’s dedication to tackling internet fraud, a crime that has proliferated in recent years, particularly among young people in the country. The agency’s crackdown on cybercrime is part of a broader effort to restore integrity and trust in Nigeria’s financial systems and to protect the country’s image on the global stage.
