Debbie Nelson, the mother of American rapper Eminem, has died at the age of 69 following complications related to lung cancer, according to a representative for the artist.
Nelson, who was a central yet controversial figure in Eminem’s early life, had a turbulent relationship with her son that played out publicly through his music and interviews. The tension between them was notably captured in his 2002 hit song “Cleanin’ Out My Closet,” where Eminem expressed resentment over his upbringing and accused his mother of personal failings.
In response, Nelson filed a defamation lawsuit against the rapper, seeking $11 million in damages. While the court ruled in her favor, she was ultimately awarded $25,000 — a sum that was reportedly reduced to about $1,600 after legal fees.
Despite years of estrangement, the pair were said to have reconciled in later years. Eminem’s 2013 track “Headlights” reflected a softer tone, with the rapper expressing regret for his earlier anger and acknowledging his mother’s struggles.
News of Nelson’s death has prompted an outpouring of sympathy from fans online, with many reflecting on the complex bond between the artist and his late mother.
