In a recent interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Mrs. Caroline Okolie, the acting Director of Library Services at Enugu State Library, has appealed to the state government to address the issue of noise pollution surrounding the library premises.
The library, standing for over 50 years, is grappling with disruptions from nearby bus terminals and businesses, hindering readers’ ability to concentrate effectively.
Mrs. Okolie emphasized the importance of utilizing noise-proof materials on the library building to create a serene environment for users.

Highlighting the need for modern facilities, Okolie expressed that incorporating an E-Library service could enhance the overall library experience and attract a larger user base.
She acknowledged the challenges posed by urban development and increased business activities around the library.
While considering possible solutions, Okolie dismissed the idea of relocating the library, asserting that such a move wouldn’t guarantee a noise-free environment in the long run.
Instead, she advocated for the installation of noise-proof materials, asserting, “With the help of noise-proof materials on the building, the library will be quiet for everyone within the building to concentrate on his or her work.”
Despite a decline in the number of regular users, especially outside examination periods, Okolie encouraged the community to make use of the library.
To further engage the public, she mentioned the library’s initiative to organize dedicated periods for children every second Saturday of the month.
The call for noise reduction measures is seen as a crucial step in preserving the sanctity of the library space and ensuring a conducive environment for learning and research.
