Prof. Paul Nnamchi, a Labour Party member who represented the state’s Enugu East/Isi-Uzo Federal Constituency, was removed from office by the Enugu State election petition tribunal.
Prince Cornelius Nnaji, the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, was instead declared the victor.
Nnaji had petitioned the tribunal, arguing that the Independent National Electoral Commission had erred in declaring Nnamchi the victor of the election.
The respondent was found to be ineligible to run for office on the Labour Party ticket due to the lack of proper sponsorship, as stated by the court.
In a unanimous verdict, the tribunal upheld the petitioner’s argument that the Labour Party candidate lacked the necessary qualifications to run for office.
