A former Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Gen. Martin Luther Agwai (rtd), has cautioned the military to steer clear of partisan politics if they are desirous of overcoming the war against the Boko Haram and other security challenges.
He also said change in leadership had become inevitable in the country.
The former COAS, who stated this while delivering a paper at the 78th birthday celebration of former President Olusegun Obasanjo in Abeokuta, Ogun State capital, Thursday, also described the celebrant as an inspiration to some generation of military officers in the country, adding that they would always be appreciative of his contributions to their lives.
In the lecture titled: “Imperatives of a National Security framework for the Development and Progress of Nigeria”, Agwai said the involvement of the military in politics would retard growth and development of the country and urged the military to remain professional.
Agwai, who is now chairman of SURE-P, said former President Obasanjo has been a source of inspiration for him and others, particularly from the minority ethnic group.
“I, for one, from somewhere (small) ethnic group in Nigeria; from a small village will be Chief of Staff. I will always remain appreciative of this, happy birthday sir!” he said.
In his remarks, Ogun state Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, who had to excuse himself for an ongoing political rally, described Obasanjo as a special breed from Nigeria and the African continent.
He assured that the All Progressives Congress (APC) “will give the desired growth and development of your dream when the party is elected come March 28″.
