Former Governor of Anambra State, Willie Maduabuchi Obiano, has filed a motion before the Federal High Court in Abuja, seeking to quash the N40 billion corruption charges brought against him by the federal government.
The motion, filed by his lead counsel, Onyechi Ikpeazu, SAN, is based on provisions of the 1999 Constitution and the Administration of the Criminal Justice Act 2015.
Obiano’s grounds for the motion include a claim that there is a subsisting appeal by the Anambra State government challenging the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission’s (EFCC) authority to investigate the funds.

He argued that there was no connection between the proof of evidence and the alleged accusations against him, emphasizing that he cannot be held accountable for actions by officials of the Anambra State government.
The former governor is facing a 9-count charge of money laundering involving N40 billion.
The EFCC alleges that Obiano bypassed financial institutions in numerous unlawful cash transactions using funds allegedly stolen from the state’s account, exceeding legally permitted limits.
Obiano seeks several orders from the court, including quashing the charges for alleged abuse of judicial process, non-disclosure of a prima facie case, and lack of jurisdiction.
The trial Judge has fixed March 13 for all pending motions to be heard.
