Experts have emphasized the urgent need for the Federal Government to prioritize Nigeria’s overlooked logistics, courier, and transport sector, which is valued at over N3tn. This call to action was made during the Courier and Logistics Management Institute (CLMI) conference and investiture in Lagos, with the theme, “Logistics Solutions and National Infrastructure Development.”
At the conference, the Executive Chairman of CLMI, Prof. Simon Emeje, highlighted the lack of attention the courier, logistics, and transport management sector has received from the Nigerian government, stressing that it remains relatively untapped on a global scale. According to him, any country neglecting this sector risks economic challenges, as logistics, courier, and transport form the bedrock of any thriving economy.
Prof. Emeje pointed out that the logistics, courier, transport, and management industry boasts an average asset worth over N3tn, presenting substantial potential for job creation. He emphasized the indispensable role of logistics in facilitating trade, enhancing the supply chain, and driving economic growth, underscoring the detrimental impact on commerce when logistics are neglected.

Despite its significant role, the Nigerian logistics sector faces obstacles such as infrastructural deficits and weak government policies, hindering it from reaching its full potential. Prof. Emeje’s plea for immediate attention echoes the sector’s vital role in sustaining and fostering economic prosperity.
He stated, “So, the take-home here is that the government should look into this industry because it’s an important sector, one with the capability to create millions of employment opportunities for our youths.” This call was supported by the former Minister of Communications, Barr. Adebayo Shittu, who encouraged the institute to draft a comprehensive proposal for government adoption, offering assistance in facilitating engagement.
Both Prof. Emeje and Barr. Shittu emphasized the sector’s significance and called on the Federal Government to establish a dedicated ministry to foster an enabling environment for Courier and Logistics Management. They drew parallels to the recognition given to the entertainment industry, underlining the potential for job creation and economic growth in the logistics sector if the necessary attention and support are provided.
