Falana Urges Religious Bodies to Defend Nigeria’s Democracy Ahead of 2027

Human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, has urged religious organisations in Nigeria to actively participate in efforts to protect the country’s democracy ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Falana said religious bodies should not remain on the sidelines as the country prepares for another major electoral contest.

He urged Christian and Muslim organisations to use their influence to promote democratic values, peaceful participation and accountability among political leaders.

The senior advocate stressed that religious institutions have an important role to play in encouraging citizens to participate actively in the electoral process and resist actions capable of undermining democracy.

Falana also called on religious leaders to speak out against electoral malpractice, abuse of power and other practices that could weaken democratic institutions.

He warned that remaining silent in the face of threats to democracy could have serious consequences for the country.

The human rights lawyer urged Nigerians to carefully assess political candidates and hold elected officials accountable for their actions and performance in office.

He maintained that protecting Nigeria’s democracy should be a collective responsibility and called on religious organisations to use their platforms to promote credible elections, national unity and respect for the rule of law.

Falana’s call comes as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 elections, with stakeholders increasingly urging Nigerians and civil society groups to play a more active role in safeguarding the electoral process and democratic institutions.
