InfoStride News is collaborating with Portland Gas for the construction of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) conversion sites in Nigeria. The announcement was made by Farouk Ahmed, the Chief Executive of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), during the groundbreaking ceremony at Portland Gas Green Park. Lukman Cardoso represented Farouk at the event and highlighted NMDPRA’s commitment to promoting cleaner fuels, such as CNG, LPG, and others, for domestic and industrial use.
The construction of the facility in Ojota, Lagos, aims to provide cost-effective alternative fuels for households and industries, particularly in the face of a growing population in the area. Cardoso commended Portland Gas for the innovative approach of establishing a one-stop shop that combines CNG, LPG, and Electric Vehicle Charging services in a single facility.
Eriye Onagoruwa, representing Olu Verheijen, the Special Adviser on Energy to President Tinubu, emphasized the collaboration between the Federal Government’s compressed natural gas initiative and Portland Gas. The partnership aims to transition towards a more environmentally conscious and economically sustainable energy landscape. Onagoruwa highlighted the potential benefits of the project, including job creation, economic diversification, and enhanced energy independence.

President Tinubu’s commitment to tackling climate change and building a cleaner, more resilient future was also underscored. The removal of fuel subsidies and the regulation of petroleum product prices, leading to increased fuel costs, was acknowledged by Folajimi Mohammed, the founder of Portland Gas. He stressed the importance of exploring alternative fuel sources like CNG and Electric Vehicles (EV) for transportation.
Projects at Portland Gas include the implementation of eco-green CNG generators, conversion of vehicles from petrol or diesel to CNG, and the establishment of training centers. Mohammed highlighted the affordability of CNG compared to traditional fuels, citing significant cost savings, reduced greenhouse gas emissions, less pollution, and enhanced safety as key benefits.
It’s worth noting that the Federal Government had earlier disclosed the cost of CNG per litre as N250. President Tinubu, in his Independence Day speech on October 1, expressed plans to expedite the procurement process for new CNG conversion kits. He assured that these kits would soon be available, facilitating the conversion of existing vehicles to use CNG. Efforts are also underway to establish training centers and workshops nationwide, aiming to equip transport operators and entrepreneurs with the necessary skills for the evolving transportation landscape.
