The Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA) has recently rewarded seventeen members of staff for distinguishing themselves in the course of duty. The assessment leading up to the awards were made between 2011 and 2013 with awardees spanning all grades and cadres in the ministry.
In attendance in the award ceremony held in the Ladi Kwali Hall of the Abuja Sheraton Hotel and Towers were the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Works, Ayogu Eze, who was also the Chairman of the occasion; the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Bukar Goni Aji; the Director – General in the Bureau of Public Procurement, Emeka Eze; the Permanent Secretary in the Federal Ministry of Works, Abubakar Koro Muhammad, who represented the Minister of Works, Kassim Ibrahim Bataiya; the President of the National Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO), who is also a member of the FERMA Governing Board, representing NARTO; other members of the Governing Board as well as the representatives of major contractors and other dignitaries.
In his address to the awardees and staff of the Agency, Ayogu Eze noted that the reward for work means more work. He further admonished them, saying those who have been recognized should show more commitment, while those yet to be recognized should not lose hope. He averred that the impact of FERMA on government’s endeavor to rehabilitate federal roads nationwide has been felt and applauded by the Nigerian public.
The Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Bukar Goni Aji in his remarks expressed joy for being associated with FERMA, the roads sector and the immediate past Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Works. “FERMA’s achievements regarding the road sector, he said has proven wrong the notion that civil servants do not contribute significantly to economic growth.
Delivering his remarks, the Chairman of the FERMA Governing Board, Ezekiel O. Adeniji stated that the agency’s board is lucky to have a competent and committed management team as well as policy for conducive environments and good will from the Goodluck Jonathan administration which gears towards turning around fortunes in the federal road networks.
Also speaking at the occasion, the Managing Director/CEO of FERMA, Gabriel Amuchi thanked the awardees and other staff for making contributions towards effective discharge of the Agency’s mandates to Nigerians as well as efficiently maintaining federal roads.
“The Agency has reduced the stock of poor and bad roads on the federal road network from 85% in 2003 when FERMA commenced operation to about 26% in 2013. FERMA is better positioned and resolved in its commitment to improving Nigeria’s federal road networks with the acquisition of necessary machinery as well as employment and training of more staff. Staff welfare is being improved by the current management,” he posited.
Those awarded were the Assistant Director and Head of the Communications and Public Relations Unit, Maryam Sanusi; the Acting General Manager of Procurement, Iniobong L. Usoro; the Co-ordinator of North-West Zone I, Kaboshiyo D. Avongs and the Head of Research and Development, Thomas Bassey Eyo.
