The Federal Government has announced that there will be no need to import food items into Nigeria despite the economic challenges facing the country.
This statement was made by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, following a meeting between President Bola Tinubu and state governors on Thursday.
Idris revealed that the government had ordered a crackdown on food hoarders and that security agencies would work with state governments to arrest hoarders and ensure that food commodities are available to Nigerians at reasonable prices.

He stated, “The governors and Mr. President have decided that security agencies will collaborate with the state governors to ensure this ends.
Again, a decision has also been taken that, in the interest of our country, there will be no need for food importation at this point.
Nigeria has the potential to feed itself and even be a net exporter of food items to other countries. What we’re seeing now is just a temporary difficulty that will soon be over.”
Idris emphasized that the various interventions implemented by the president to ensure food security would soon yield positive results.
He also noted that Tinubu had declared a state of emergency on agriculture several months ago, and both the federal and state governments have made significant investments in crop production and livestock development and management.
