ABUJA (Federal Ministry of Defence Report) – The Nigerian Government has been commended on the inclusion of retired military personnel into the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), saying the decision by government indicates that the country deeply appreciates the services of military personnel.
The Minister of State for Defence, Musiliu Obanikoro said this over the weekend at the Nigerian Armed Forces Resettlement Centre (NAFRC), Oshodi in Lagos at the passing out ceremony of over 400 military personnel, who were said to have voluntarily retired from the Nigerian Military after 35 years of service to the nation.
Musiliu Obanikoro affirmed that the government would not relent in its effort to ensure that retirement life is made pleasurable for retired military personnel. Adding, the President Goodluck Jonathan-led administration has re-affirmed its commitment to the welfare and wellness of the military by ensuring that service personnel are properly resettled after their gallant and meritorious service to their fatherland. He urged them to be good ambassadors of the military wherever they choose to spend the rest of their retirement life through acts and attitudes that foster and ensure peace and tranquility as well as love and unity of the Nigerian State as one indivisible entity.
Earlier in his welcome remarks, the Commandant of the Nigerian Armed Forces Resettlement Centre (NAFRC) Oshodi, Monday Morgan (Air Vice Marshal) said that plans are underway towards enlarging the scope of the resettlement programme of the Centre to cover both the military and para-military personnel in the country. He informed that the passage of the statement as an executive bill will allow the Centre to train not only the other cadres of military and para-military services, but also officers in pre-retirement on managerial and entrepreneurial skills. The passing out celebration was marked with a colourful exchange of emotions as well as farewell to fellow military officers.
