Report from Federal Ministry of Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Affairs.
Given the critical need for the grassroots to feel the impact of the Transformation Agenda of the present administration in the country, the Minister of Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Affairs, Alhaji Kabiru Tanimu Turaki has again laid bare the readiness of the Federal Government to ensure proper and smoother local government administration in Nigeria.
Turaki, while receiving the leadership of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) in his office, said, “Leadership starts and ends at the grassroots; so, the Federal Government under President Goodluck Jonathan will do whatever is humanly and legally possible to ensure proper Local Government administration in Nigeria.”
The Minister buttressed with clear evidence of the commitment of the Government to the development of Local Governments, reiterated that the introduction of the nomadic education – Almajiri schools and SURE-P, are meant to support what Local Governments are doing to provide job for the teeming unemployed youths in Nigeria. He emphasized that Mr. President would do well to see that Local Government chairmen were not mere toothless bull dogs.
The leadership of ALGON among other things, sought for Federal Government’s intervention in seeing to the autonomous and independent Local Governments in Nigeria and also to ensure that National Assembly amend section 166 of the Constitution which spells out the funding of Local Governments.
