Former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, SAN, has formally resigned his membership of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and announced his defection to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Malami made the announcement on Tuesday, July 2, 2025, explaining that his move was motivated by the urgent need to align with a new coalition committed to rescuing Nigeria from what he described as “further decline.”
He stressed that his decision was born not out of anger or personal ambition but out of love for the country and deep concern over the hardship facing millions of Nigerians.

“My Fellow Nigerians, and the Good People of Kebbi State, after wide consultations and deep personal reflection, I hereby announce my resignation from the All Progressives Congress (APC) and my decision to align with the African Democratic Congress (ADC), the party of choice for our coalition — a coalition driven by the urgent need to rescue our country from further decline,” Malami said in his statement.
Decrying the current state of the nation, Malami accused the government of neglecting governance in favour of politics while insecurity, poverty, and hopelessness worsen across the country.
“Nigeria is bleeding. Insecurity has taken over our homes, especially in the North. Banditry, kidnappings, and terrorism have become part of our lives while the government prioritizes politics over the safety of its citizens,” he said.
“Our economy is in shambles. Prices of basic food items have tripled. The poor can no longer feed their families. Jobs are disappearing. Young people are hopeless. Instead of focusing on real solutions, the government is consumed by propaganda and political distractions.”
He lamented that appointments, projects, and policies are now driven by “political loyalty and not national interest,” adding that he could no longer be part of a system that “watches in silence as Nigerians suffer and die.”
Declaring his commitment to the new political platform, Malami said the ADC stands for “justice, inclusion, competence, and national renewal.”
“I believe that through this coalition and with the support of Nigerians, we can chart a new course for our beloved country,” he added.
To the people of Kebbi State, Malami pledged continued loyalty and service, promising to amplify their voices and restore hope for the future.
“To every Nigerian, I urge you to join this movement. Let us rise above fear and reclaim our nation. Nigeria belongs to all of us.”
