The 2023 New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) governorship candidate in Gombe State, Khamisu Mailantarki, formally joined the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Saturday, pledging to strengthen the party’s bid to unseat the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state by 2027.
Mailantarki, who had resigned from the NNPP three months ago without affiliating with another party, was welcomed at the PDP state secretariat during a reception ceremony.
Speaking at the event, he expressed his commitment to enhancing the PDP’s prospects in Gombe, citing the APC-led government’s policies as ineffective and detrimental to the welfare of Nigerians.
“PDP is the only strong party capable of seizing power from the APC, which is the reason for my decision to join it after quitting the NNPP,” Mailantarki stated.
He also criticized Gombe State Governor Muhammadu Yahaya, condemning some of the governor’s policies as harsh and unsupportive of the public’s needs.
Mailantarki pointed to policies such as the revocation of land titles and the requirement for civil servants to undergo daily biometric registration, warning that such measures undermine workers’ well-being, particularly amid economic challenges.
“It is unfair to force workers to report to work five times a day without offering them a commensurate salary in this difficult period,” Mailantarki added.
Receiving Mailantarki, PDP Gombe State Chairman Abner Kwaskebe praised his decision to join the party, describing it as a significant gain for the PDP. Kwaskebe assured members that the party would provide a fair and inclusive platform for all.
