Peter Babalola, the former Chief of Staff to ex-Governor Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola, has been suspended from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) over accusations of engaging in activities detrimental to the party’s interests.
Babalola, who served as Chief of Staff during Oyinlola’s administration in Osun State, was recently appointed as the Chairman of the College of Education, Ila-Orangun, by Governor Ademola Adeleke in 2023.
However, his continued association with the party has come under scrutiny, leading to his suspension.

The suspension letter, dated 27th August 2024, was signed by 17 party executives from Ward 7 in the Irewole Local Government Area of Osun State.
The letter, issued under the leadership of Odelade Adesoye, outlined the reasons for Babalola’s suspension, citing a pattern of behaviour that was seen as damaging to the party’s image and cohesion.
According to the letter, Babalola had been involved in “various anti-party activities” over the past two years, which were described as habitual and harmful to the party’s reputation.
The letter also noted that Babalola had failed to attend any PDP ward or local government meetings in the last two years, a period during which his actions were allegedly putting the party at risk.
The letter stated: “After exhaustive deliberations on the various anti-party activities of Elder Peter Babalola in the PDP for the past two years, and his habitual engagements in various activities that can put the party into disrepute, coupled with the fact that he has not attended the PDP ward meeting or local government meeting in the last two years, the executive of PDP in Ward 07, Irewole Local Government hereby suspends Elder Peter Adebayo Babalola from PDP Ward 07, Irewole Local Government with effect today 27th August 2024.”
The suspension letter also made it clear that Babalola was no longer considered a member of the PDP in Ward 7, Irewole Local Government, effectively severing his ties with the party at the local level.
This action marks a significant development in Babalola’s political career, given his previous high-profile roles within the state.
The suspension is indicative of growing tensions within the PDP in Osun State, where internal disputes have increasingly come to the fore.
Babalola’s suspension is likely to send ripples through the party, particularly given his influence and the positions he has held in the past.
As Chief of Staff under Oyinlola’s administration, Babalola was a key figure in Osun State politics, and his recent appointment by Governor Adeleke as Chairman of the College of Education, Ila-Orangun, suggested that he continued to wield considerable influence.
However, the reasons cited for his suspension point to a deeper conflict within the party.
The charge of “anti-party activities” is a serious one, often levied against members who are perceived to be acting in ways that undermine the party’s unity or electoral prospects.
In Babalola’s case, the allegations seem to revolve around a lack of participation in party activities and meetings, coupled with actions that the local party executives believe have brought disrepute to the PDP.
The decision to suspend Babalola from the party in his local ward suggests that the PDP leadership in Osun State is keen to assert its authority and maintain discipline within its ranks.
This move can be seen as an attempt to send a clear message that any behaviour perceived as disloyal or detrimental to the party’s interests will not be tolerated, regardless of the individual’s past contributions or standing.
The implications of Babalola’s suspension could be far-reaching, particularly if the decision is upheld by higher levels of the party hierarchy.
It may also prompt further scrutiny of other party members who are seen as not fully aligned with the party’s current direction or leadership.
For Babalola, this suspension represents a significant setback, and it remains to be seen how he will respond.
Whether he will challenge the suspension or accept it and possibly seek to realign himself with the party remains unclear.
What is certain, however, is that this development adds another layer of complexity to the political landscape in Osun State, where the PDP is facing both internal and external challenges.
As the PDP in Osun State continues to navigate these turbulent waters, the outcome of this and similar disciplinary actions will likely play a crucial role in shaping the party’s future trajectory in the state.
The handling of Babalola’s case will be watched closely by party members and political observers alike, as it may set a precedent for how the PDP deals with dissent and internal discord in the run-up to future elections.
