Former Chairman of Owerri Municipal Council, Chukwuemeka Ebere, popularly known as ABJ, has formally announced his resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and his defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Ebere attributed his departure from the PDP to the lingering leadership crisis plaguing the party at both the state and national levels.
Speaking on the development, the former council boss disclosed that he had submitted his resignation letter to the PDP Ward Chairman of Ikenegbu Ward 1, Owerri Municipal, thereby ending his long-standing association with the party.

“PDP had been a political home for me, but its ongoing leadership challenges have hindered meaningful progress. I am joining the APC because I believe in its vision for inclusive governance and development,” he stated.
Ebere assured his new political family of his commitment to fostering unity within the APC in Owerri Municipal, pledging to contribute towards the development of the state and the fulfillment of the party’s promises.
“This move marks a new chapter in my political journey. I am fully prepared to play my part to ensure that the APC delivers on its mandate to the people,” he added.
Welcoming Ebere into the party, APC State Chairman, MacDonald Ebere, commended the former council chairman for what he described as a bold and progressive decision. He described Ebere as a grassroots mobilizer whose presence would further strengthen the APC’s influence in Owerri Municipal and across Imo State.
“Our party remains open to all progressives who wish to join us. With leaders like Chukwuemeka Ebere on board, Owerri Municipal will become an APC stronghold, ready to enjoy continuous development and the dividends of democracy under Governor Hope Uzodinma’s administration,” the APC chairman said.
Similarly, the Senator representing Owerri Zone in the Senate, Ezenwa Onyewuchi, hailed Ebere’s defection, describing him as a seasoned politician whose experience would be a major asset to the party.
“His leadership skills and political influence will play a significant role in the APC’s success as Imo State prepares for future electoral contests,” Onyewuchi stated.
Chukwuemeka Ebere previously served as Chairman of Owerri Municipal Council under the short-lived administration of former Governor Emeka Ihedioha, between May 2019 and January 2020.
