Sunderland 1-3 Norwich
Sunderland’s season is not looking good and they were 2-0 down at home in the first half. Russell Martin opened the scoring from close range when the ball fell to him after Costel Pantilimon parried the ball into his path from a Robbie Brady shot. Steven Whittaker made it two with some excellent passing between him and Wes Hoolahan and Nathan Redmond got in on the action after the break to score the third. The home fans got something to cheer about when Premier League debutant Duncan Watmore scored for the hosts late on.
Swansea 2-0 Newcastle
Bafetimbi Gomis displayed his panther celebration in the 2-2 draw with Chelsea and Swansea fans did not have to wait long to see it again. Jonjo Shelvey opened up the Newcastle defence and the Frenchman collected the ball, lost Chancel Mbemba, rounded Tim Krul and scored inside ten minutes. Then, just before half-time, Daryl Janmaat was sent off for a second bookable offence when he pulled Jefferson Montero to the ground and it was the Ecuadorian whose cross saw Andre Ayew make it 2-0.
Tottenham 2-2 Stoke
Tottenham threw away a two-goal lead against Stoke having gone 2-0 up by half-time. Eric Dier and Nacer Chadli’s efforts were cancelled out by a Marko Arnautovic penalty and Mame Biram Diouf in the space of five second half minutes. Hugo Lloris and Jack Butland both produced excellent saves to keep the scores down.
Watford 0-0 West Brom
It was all square at half-time at Vicarage Road, despite Watford’s dominance. A rare foray into the Watford penalty area from West Brom early in the second half saw Saido Berahino appeal for a penalty, though the home side continued to press, but they tired towards the end. Baggies manager Tony Pulis will be happier with the point here.
West Ham 1-2 Leicester
Shinji Okazaki headed in from a yard out after Adrian had superbly saved his initial volley and then five minutes before the break, Okazaki fed Marc Albrighton, who pulled it back for Riyad Mahrez to slam the ball into the Hammers’ goal. While West Ham’s popular new signing Dimitri Payet fired West Ham back into the game from 16 yards, the home side were unable to build on their excellent win at Arsenal in their first game and the day was made worse by goalkeeper Adrian’s red card late on.
