Hosts Gabon and Cameroon have reached the semis of the ongoing 2013 Economic and Monetary Community of Central Africa (CEMAC) Cup underway in Bitam and Franceville.
The hosts secured their place at the next stage courtesy a 2-1 win over neighbours Equatorial Guinea in the ultimate Group ‘A’ match on Sunday (December 15) in Franceville.
A brace from veteran striker Daniel Cousin ensured Les Pantheres maintained their winning streak at the regional tournament, with Thierry Fedjeu netting a consolation for the Nzalang Nacional. It was the successive defeat for the Equatoguineans after 1-2 loss to Cameroon in the previous fixture.
Gabon finished on six points, and will be joined by Cameroon, with three points at the semis, whilst point-less Equatorial Guinea are out of the competition.
In Group B, holders Congo and Central African Republic have already secured their places at the last four ahead of the ultimate meeting between the two sides later on Monday (December 16) in Bitam.
Both sides recorded lone goal victories over Chad, to send the latter crushing out of the tournament.
The eight edition of the tournament organized by the Central African Football Federations’ Union (UNIFFAC) features only local-based footballers from members of the zonal union, and also provides a platform to unearth talents, ends on Saturday, December 21.
Meanwhile, Gabon and Congo are using the tournament to gauge their preparations for next year’s Oange African Nations Championship (CHAN) in South Africa. Gabon will face Burundi, DR Congo and Mauritania in Group D whilst Congo battles Ethiopia, Ghana and Libya in Group C.
