An early goal by Erwin Nguema helped Gabon beat DR Congo 1-0 in a Group D of the Orange African Nations Championship match played Saturday 18 January at Peter Mokaba stadium in Polokwane. The win takes the Panthers of Gabon to four (4) points while beaten DR Congo remain on three (3)
Nguema unleashed a powerful header after mere two minutes of play that beat Robert Kidiaba in Congolese goal. It would turn out to be the only goal of the match but both sides had opportunities to add to that strike but none when made to count.
The Leopards of DR Congo went close to equalising when Ndombe Mumbele found Eddy Emomo with a fine ball but the latter could not finish off the move. DR Congo came lose again to making it one (1) piece this time round from a ferocious free ick taken by defender Erick Nkulukuta that was going in except for a fine save from Bitseki Moto in Gabonese goal
Gabon had chances to add to Nguema’s goal with the closet of them falling to Lionel Yacounya who dribbled his way into the box only to see a deflection deny him a goal. Cyrille Ayebe also missed a scoring opportunity to put Gabon further in front
Kidiaba kept the score line at 1-0 nil when he summoned all his experience to thwart Bonaventure Sokambi would had broken through and tried to place his short beyond the keeper. At the other end Ngoyi Emomo saw his long range shot just centimeters off target with 53 minutes gone. The Congolese continued pushing for the equaliser and Jean Kasusula stung Bitseki’s palms with a full volley with the ball parry back into play and kindly fell to Ebunga Simbi he was unable to make it count and DR Congo’s chances were slipping away.
The derby match which was fairly entertaining fell victim to the pattern at CHAN 2014 so far that of a tale of missed chances and poor finishing. Not surprising that goal scorer Erwin Nguema was selected Man of the Match. DR Congo tried in vain to find the equaliser and Gabon could not add any more goals.
