Ryan Giggs has told BBC Wales it would be “great” to see Gareth Bale join Manchester United — but he cannot see a move happening any time soon.
Former Tottenham winger Bale has often been linked with a move to Old Trafford and former United boss David Moyes said the Wales star had been his top target in summer 2013.
Instead, Bale joined Real Madrid at the end of that transfer window and has since won two Champions Leagues and a Copa del Rey.
The 27-year-old signed a new Madrid contract until June 2022 last year, when he said playing at the Bernabeu was the “pinnacle” of the game.
And Giggs said: “He looks happy at Real Madrid. I don’t think he’s going anywhere at the moment.
“From a fan’s point of view, it would be great to see him back in the Premier League. The United fans would love to see him at Old Trafford.
“You talk about the big clubs and United is up there, but while he’s happy there [at Madrid], I can’t see him leaving.”
After returning to action following three months out with an ankle injury and scoring against Espanyol at the weekend, Bale said he was expecting to be fully fit for Wales’ World Cup qualifier against Republic of Ireland on March 24.
Giggs said Bale “made the difference” when he was in the side, adding: “He’s such a big player for Wales. He’s always the one that can make the difference.
“He’s done it time and time again. When the pressure’s on him to produce, he produces.”
