Abuja (Federal Ministry of Power Report) – At the recently concluded Bi-national Commission Meeting between Nigeria and Germany on energy in Abuja, the leader of the German delegation, Renate Von Bodden disclosed that the German Development Bank – KFW has earmarked $200 million (USD) support in form of Green Credit Line to Nigeria.
While speaking on the facility, Renate Von Bodden said that it was meant to serve as support base for small and medium enterprises, specifically for the development of renewable energy and energy efficiency projects. She added that another facility worth €5 million (Euros) has been set aside for technical assistance through the KFW.
The leader of the German delegation explained that the German agency has the experience needed by Nigeria to develop its renewable energy projects. She also expressed satisfaction with the commitment so far exhibited by Nigerian officials, stating that the German Government has been working with the Nigerian Government on several energy- related projects. “Nigeria is on track with its vision to provide more of its citizens with electricity,” she noted.
Bodden promised that Germany will continue to support the various energy related initiatives; stressing that as far as her country is concerned it is only issues pertaining to the Polio Eradication Programme that is sharing equal attention with the energy sector.
Earlier in his remarks, the Minister of Power, Chinedu Nebo (Professor) represented by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Power, Godknows Igali said that the co-operation between Nigeria and Germany is a good example of how countries can mutually work together for the benefit of its people. He commended the German Government for the varied projects undertaken in Nigeria as well as their support to the Azura project which has reached advanced stage.
Chinedu Nebo further informed that after the last Bi-national Meeting held in Berlin, the German Government approved the 1megawatt renewable electricity project for the University of Ibadan to create opportunities for research as Nigerians have become tired of the nuisance created by diesel run generators. “The success of this project will be a template to be replicated in Universities across the 6 geo-political zones,” he said.
The Minister also commended the German Government for its intervention in rural development programmes through the provision of access to power for farmers in the rural areas to enable them undertake irrigation activities. On gas flaring, the Minister assured that a comprehensive gas master-plan will soon address their concerns; indicating that Nigeria will appreciate if the Germans are ready to invest in Nigeria’s gas plan.
