At the end of every year, lists of the names of the wealthiest individuals are published in the news. Many of these individuals seem to have more money than they can spend, and they often use their position to help others. While some distribute their wealth to their families and friends, others donate part of their estate to charities or causes that they find meaningful and worthwhile. Many successful individuals donate to causes that have personally impacted them. There are several ways that business leaders or celebrities can make a difference in the lives of others
Supporting Charities
Many successful people often donate to charities that provide services and support to those in need or that are linked to specific causes. For example, software developers may donate to charities that provide technology education to lower income children. Grocery store chain owners may donate to charities that provide food to families who live in third-world countries. Retail stores sometimes give back a portion of their sales to charities within their local communities. Celebrities may often donate to charities that are based in their hometowns or to performing arts programs for children. There are a wide variety of charities available for those who wish to give.
Funding Research
Successful individuals who have been impacted by diseases or health situations may feel drawn to support organizations that provide awareness or funding for health crises. Stephen Wynn, founder of Wynn resorts, provided critical funding for the Institute of Vision Research at the University of Iowa. Wynn suffered vision loss from an eye disorder and has provided aid in hopes that testing and research can lead to a cure. The research facility has been able to uncover more information about eye diseases that lead to vision loss because of the generous donation.
Individuals who have been impacted by cancer may contribute to charities or foundations that are dedicated to cancer research, or celebrities who have had family members in need of bone marrow may lead bone marrow donor awareness campaigns.
Raising Awareness
Businessmen and celebrities may give back in other ways than direct donations. For example, a businessman may raise awareness of a cause among colleagues or employees. Awareness campaigns can often generate large amounts of donations by gathering several small donations from many people. Well-known businessmen or celebrities who lend their names to causes can raise awareness and donations by simply using their influence. Social media has been instrumental in raising awareness for disorders or diseases that have historically not gained attention from mainstream media sources.
Making a Difference
The research institutes, foundations and organizations that are created from the donations raised do a great amount of good. Charities are able to promote education and art programs. Research can lead to new medications or cures for diseases. Other programs exist to provide financial assistance or shelter to families in need. Whatever cause is being supported, the generosity of individuals who donate leads to better lives for individuals who are in need of help.
