Benue State Governor, Hyacinth Alia, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to promoting gender diversity and recognising the capabilities of women in leadership roles.
During a ceremony at the Old Banquet Hall of the Benue State Government House in Makurdi, Governor Alia made history by swearing in Barrister Aber Deborah as the first female Secretary to the State Government (SSG) of Benue State.
This milestone not only highlights the governor’s confidence in the abilities of Benue women but also marks a significant step towards inclusivity and meritocracy in governance.
Governor Alia, in his address, emphasised the critical roles that women play in the socio-economic development of society.
He noted that the appointment of Barrister Aber Deborah is a clear demonstration of his administration’s dedication to elevating women into strategic positions of influence.
“As the first woman ever to be appointed as Secretary to the State Government in Benue State, Barr. Aber Serumun Deborah’s appointment is a testament to the confidence I, and indeed this administration, have in the abilities of the women of Benue,” Governor Alia stated.
He continued, “We recognise the important roles women play in our society, and this appointment reflects our determination to elevate merit and diversity in leadership.”
This historic appointment underscores the governor’s belief that empowering women to take on leadership roles is essential for the balanced and effective governance of the state.
By placing qualified women in key positions, Governor Alia aims to set a precedent that talent and capability, rather than gender, are the primary considerations for leadership roles in Benue State.
He expressed unwavering confidence in Barrister Aber’s ability to execute her duties effectively, highlighting her role in coordinating government activities, fostering inter-ministerial collaboration, and driving policies that will steer Benue towards sustainable development.
Governor Alia also used the occasion to call on public servants, stakeholders, and the people of Benue State to support the new SSG and his administration. He emphasised the importance of collective effort in the task of building a prosperous state.
“The work of building the state involves collective efforts,” he said, urging all to collaborate and lend their support in the pursuit of progress and development.
In her response, Barrister Aber Deborah expressed profound gratitude to Governor Hyacinth Alia and acknowledged the significance of her appointment as the first female SSG of Benue State.
She credited her achievement to the grace of God and the trust bestowed upon her by the governor.
“I am deeply honoured to be entrusted with this significant responsibility, and I assure the governor and the people of Benue State of my unwavering dedication to serving with diligence and integrity,” Aber stated.
She pledged to lead her office in alignment with the administration’s strategic vision, focusing on setting a solid foundation for a more prosperous and well-governed Benue State.
The appointment of Barrister Aber as the first female SSG in Benue State is not just a personal achievement for her but a landmark event for the state.
It sends a powerful message about the importance of gender equality in governance and the need to harness the talents and skills of all citizens, regardless of gender.
By breaking this glass ceiling, Governor Alia has not only opened doors for future generations of women leaders in Benue State but has also set a positive example for other states in Nigeria.
Governor Alia’s administration has consistently highlighted its commitment to inclusivity and the empowerment of women, as seen in various initiatives aimed at improving the socio-economic conditions of women in Benue State.
This latest appointment aligns with his broader vision of creating a government that truly represents the diverse fabric of the state’s population.
The governor’s call for unity and collective support resonates strongly as the state moves forward with its development agenda.
By involving more women in leadership and decision-making processes, Benue State is poised to harness a broader range of perspectives and solutions to its challenges.
This inclusivity is expected to translate into more effective governance, benefiting all citizens of the state.
As Barrister Aber Deborah embarks on her new role, the eyes of the state—and indeed the nation—will be on her to deliver on the expectations that come with such a groundbreaking appointment.
Her success will not only validate Governor Alia’s faith in her abilities but will also reinforce the case for more women in leadership across Nigeria.
The governor’s move to diversify his leadership team with competent and capable individuals like Aber is a bold step towards a more equitable and progressive future for Benue State.
