Hayatou saddened by death of Julio Grondona

CAF President, Issa Hayatou, in a message to the Argentine Football Association, has expressed pain following the death of Julio Humberto Grondona on Wednesday, 30 July 2014.

“It is with great sadness that I learned of the death of Mr. Julio Grondona, President of the Argentine Football Association and Senior Vice President of FIFA, whom I have been close to for over 25 years”,

In his message, the CAF President recalled his relationship with the deceased, an apprenticeship of every moment spent beside this man, who died at 82-years, and who has been through all the rungs of the administration of football, and accompanied the mutations of world football.

“Founder of a football club (Arsenal Futbol Club) since 1956, President of the Argentine federation from 1979 till his death, member of FIFA Executive Committee since 1988, Julio Grondona had at all times made known his passion for football, a development-oriented sport to which he consecrated his life to the extent of his city, his country, his continent, and the world.

“To me he is an example of abnegation, perseverance, and self-sacrifice”, Issa Hayatou remarked in his message to bereaved family on his behalf, CAF Executive Committee and the African football family.
