BANGALORE, INDIA–(Marketwired – Feb 10, 2014) – Donato Tramuto, the Chairman and CEO of Physicians Interactive and the Founder of Health eVillages, Friday presented two awards for healthcare programs in India and announced that Health eVillages is committed to expanding its efforts in India from Physicians Interactive’s Mumbai office.
The awards were made during Health 2.0 India’s “Simply Lead” conference at Bangalore’s CMR Institute of Technology, where Tramuto was also asked to provide closing remarks.
Tramuto announced two grants from Health eVillages during the conference, which focuses on rebooting and reframing leadership in India for the needs of 21st Century healthcare. The awards were presented to Dr. B.R. Lakshmi for her efforts to eradicate Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) in the country, and to Kid Powered Media for its work on social issues faced by street, slum and working children in India.
Dr. Lakshmi is the Founder and Director of Molecular Diagnostics, Counseling, Care & Research Centre (MDCRC) at Kurinji Hospital, Coimbatore. DMD, which results in muscle degeneration and eventual death, affects one in 3,600 boys. Symptoms usually appear in male children before the age of 6 and may be visible in early infancy. Laboratory testing can now identify children who carry the active dystrophin gene mutation at birth. The current life expectancy for a patient identified with DMD is 25 years.
The expansion to India is part of Health eVillages efforts to provide iPods®, iPads® and other handheld devices equipped with specialized references and clinical decision support tools to improve primary and preventive healthcare in underserved areas around the world. Health eVillages is a program founded by Tramuto and Physicians Interactive in partnership with the not-for-profit Robert F. Kennedy Center for Justice & Human Rights (RFK Center).
In addition to India, Health eVillages now provides support to communities in Kenya, Uganda, South Africa, Haiti and areas of rural Louisiana affected by the Gulf Oil Spill.
Tramuto also spoke on two panels at the conference on how Health eVillages takes an Integrative Intelligence approach with the healthcare industry, government agencies and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) to collaborate in providing primary care to underserved areas across the globe.
In his closing remarks, Tramuto thanked all of the innovators and presenters for recognizing to never forget about the poor; and that through Integrative Intelligence “we can collaborate to make a real difference in realizing our collective dream for a better world.”
“Health eVillages is proud to recognize Dr. Lakshmi and Kid Powered Media with these awards,” said Tramuto. “These awards combined with our commitment to expand Health eVillages to India clearly demonstrates Health eVillages’ belief that an Integrative Intelligence approach accelerates the collaborative efforts needed to provide healthcare services for the underserved citizens of the world.”
Health 2.0 India is an exclusive event for visionary leaders, physicians, patients, start-ups, health industry experts, investors, health care corporations, government officials and others to help shape what’s possible in healthcare in the country. Tramuto spoke on the Integrative Intelligence approach during panel discussions on “The Art of the Possible” in global healthcare and holistic population health issues.
