A tragic incident occurred in Yauri Local Government Area of Kebbi State, as a hippopotamus killed Malam Usman Maigadi, a guard at the Orchard Farm owned by the Emir of Yauri, Dr Muhammad Zayyanu-Abdullahi.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the 60-year-old guard was attacked on Sunday while fishing in the Yauri River near Tillo Village.
The animal, possibly perceiving Maigadi as a threat to its calf, reportedly attacked in self-defense.

Local authorities confirmed the incident, with the Chairman of Yauri Local Government, Alhaji Abubakar Shu’aibu, announcing that Maigadi had been laid to rest according to Islamic rites following funeral prayers in Yauri.
In response to the tragic event, Kebbi State Governor Nasir Idris extended his condolences to the Yauri Emirate and the bereaved family.
In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Alhaji Ahmed Idris, the governor urged the family to find solace in the will of Allah and to remain strong in their faith.
Governor Idris prayed for the forgiveness of the deceased’s shortcomings and asked Allah to grant Maigadi eternal rest in Jannatul Firdaus.
