Bayern Munich defender Mats Hummels was wrong to visit his former Borussia Dortmund teammates’ dressing room before the Klassiker, according to Lothar Matthaus.
Hummels, 27, left Dortmund this summer to join their Bundesliga rivals for €35 million and was booed throughout the 1-0 defeat to his former club.
And Matthaus felt that the defender should have saved his prematch visit to Thomas Tuchel’s squad for after the game.
“I would not forbid Mats Hummels if I was the present coach, but would suggest that [takes place] after the game,” the Germany legend told Sky. “Before the game, the concentration should be on the game and not the old friendships.”
Hummels told the Daily Mail in reply: “I don’t care about criticism,” before insisting that Bayern played well in defeat. “It won’t be shown in the highlights, but we were finding good space and had we played diagonal passes at certain times, then we would have had more big chances.”
Bayern are looking for their fifth successive Bundesliga title but sit behind surprise leaders RB Leipzig.
“FC Bayern is looking for its form,” Matthaus added. “[They] lack fitness, joy and self-assurance. Many things that made them strong last year are missing here.”
