More than two decades after leading Nigeria to the fifth position on the Fifa rankings, the highest ever by the country, Dutchman Clemence Westerhof wants another crack at the Nigeria national team -the Super Eagles.
Westerhof was instrumental in assembling an exciting band of footballers who conquered Africa and went further to prove themselves at the world stage in 1994.
That golden age- between 1989-1994 could be described as one of Nigeria’s finest in footballing terms as the team played some attractive swash-buckling football which gained the country a lot of admirers.
The Dutchman reckons he can get Nigeria back to the glory days after successive Africa Cup of Nations no-shows.
The Nigeria Football Federation have sounded out a foreign coach for the Super Eagles following the disappointing end to the Gabon 2017 qualifiers and with interim coach Samson Siasia likely to go back to the U23’s Westerhof has thrown his hat into the ring.
Westerhof’s last engagement in Nigeria was with the Kwara Football Academy but wants a return to the land where he made his name spending 6 years on the Super Eagles job.
“Nigeria need a strong person with the required experience to bring them out of the negative position they are in right now,”Westerhof recently said.
“Nigeria is a big country and the national team should be in the top 10 in Fifa’s world rankings, not the 67th position they currently occupy.
