The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, revealed on Saturday that he endured sleepless nights to ensure Sim Fubara became the Governor of Rivers State.
Wike made the statement during a reception organised in his honour by the Rivers State Ijaw Peoples Congress in Port Harcourt.
Wike and Governor Fubara have been at odds since Fubara assumed office, despite efforts by President Bola Tinubu to mediate between them.
The disagreement between the two prominent political figures in Rivers State continues to draw attention.
During his speech, Wike addressed the ongoing tension, expressing his frustration with the criticisms directed at his role in Fubara’s rise to power.
He said, “Who has Fubara made? All the things you see are from people envious of our progress. They couldn’t do what we are doing today.”
He further stated that his political opponents, whom he claimed had been repeatedly defeated, were behind the attempts to undermine his efforts.
“These are people we have defeated politically several times. If the opportunity arises again, we will defeat them again,” Wike declared.
Highlighting his contribution to the Ijaw community, Wike emphasised the significance of Fubara’s election, stating, “I have made an Ijaw man governor of Rivers State.
God used us. All of us here had sleepless nights. So, who loves Ijaw more? Is it those who appear on television but cannot even make their Ijaw brother governor?”
Wike questioned the credibility of those criticising him, noting their inability to elevate an Ijaw candidate to the governorship in the past.
“If they had been that powerful since the old Rivers State, would Ijaw have ever become governor? Where are they now?” he asked, defending his role in the political landscape of Rivers State.
The minister’s remarks come amidst ongoing political friction in the state, with his relationship with Governor Fubara remaining strained despite efforts to mend their differences.
