I Have A Good Natural Tone – Big Sean

Big Sean has remained relatively quiet outside of a few festival appearances on the music front as he works toward his next highly anticipated solo album. VIBE actually caught up with the Detroit MC following his set at One Music Fest in Atlanta earlier this month to get his take on a multitude of topics, including his friendship with Mac Miller and experimenting with his voice in a singing capacity.

Like much of the hip-hop community, Sean was shaken after learning about the tragic loss of Mac, even though the pair only linked up for a lone track “Hundred Dollar Bill Skyscraper” back in 2012. “I shed a lot of tears because I knew the type of person he was. He was a great dude, he had a positive energy about him and was just gone way too soon,” he said.

Sean Don reflected on the unlikely friendship he formed with Mac when the late rapper showed up to one of his early Finally Famous mixtape meet-and-greets in 2008. “We first met when he came to my meet-and-greet as a fan and said that he raps. I signed his mixtape,” the 30-year-old recalled. “That same night I was performing, but he was poppin’. He hopped on the mic and everyone knew who he was. I wasn’t familiar with him, but this had to be before he dropped K.I.D.S. Ever since then, we’ve just always been cool.”

Sean also opened up about the possibility of fans hearing some more singing from the G.O.O.D. Music artist in the near future. In order to tap into more of his R&B mentality, the “Bigger Than Me” rapper is taking vocal lessons and sharpening his skills on the piano.

“I feel like I have a good natural tone and my vocal teacher told me I have a really good voice so I’ve been working on it, doing my vocal warm-ups, just taking my craft a little more seriously,” he says. “All I ever wanted to be was a rapper but lately, I’ve been writing songs.”
