Liverpool’s Philippe Coutinho is hoping for his best goal-scoring season yet after starting the 2016-17 campaign how he means to go on.
The Brazil international scored a brace at Emirates Stadium in the Reds’ thrilling 4-3 win over Arsenal on Sunday in their Premier League opener.
Coutinho drew Liverpool back level in the first half with a long-range free kick before grabbing his second goal of the day in the 56th minute by finishing off a well-worked move from Jurgen Klopp’s side.
The attacker found the back of the net 12 times last term and now feels confident that he can improve on that figure this season.
“Yes, I think I can score more this season,” Coutinho told the Liverpool Echo. “I always said that the one thing I really needed to improve was to score more goals.
Sadio Mane was also an impressive performer on Sunday afternoon — capping off an eye-catching Premier League debut for the club with a wonderful solo goal.
Coutinho feels the £30 million summer signing from Southampton has been a great addition to the squad.
“Sadio is a top player,” Coutinho added. “It was a great goal and I am very happy to have him in our team. He has fitted in really well here.
“It’s not only him, we have a lot of quality players here and some who weren’t here today. The squad is strong.”
There were fears that Coutinho had damaged his hamstring after he limped off with 20 minutes to go away at the Gunners, but the 24-year-old quickly eased concerns afterwards.
He concluded: “I’m fine. It was just cramp. Nothing else.”
“I did that last season and now I want to keep on improving. The most important thing is the group. But the more goals I score, the more I can help the team.
“I am happy not only because I scored two goals but because the team played well and we got the three points we wanted.
“We feel good. It was a tough game but we played really well in the second half. It’s the first step for us. To win away at one of our rivals will be good for our confidence.”
